Developed by fairly new stuido Witchcraft, Digimon Survive is a rather interesting game for Digimon fans. The narrative aims to give players a more mature experience, allowing their choices to lead them down dark paths, while the battle system involves grid-based tactics similar to Fire Emblem. Unfortunately, prospective players haven’t been able to see much of either the story or battle mechanics, thanks to the game’s consistent delays. With the recent news that ESRB have finally rated the game though, there is finally some hope that a more specific release date will be confirmed soon.

Despite claims of maturity, there won’t be any extreme adult themes seen in Digimon Survive, as according to the ESRB, the game has been rated “T for Teen.” Citing Crude Humor, Fantasy Violence, Language, and Mild Blood" as the reasons for the Teen rating, it seems that those hoping for a gory, adult Digimon experience may be left wanting. Usually, an ESRB rating indicates that a games release will be coming soon, and often games’ ratings aren’t revealed until a release date is announced. As was the case with roguelike shooter Deathloop getting its rating in July 2021, and was then released in September of the same year.

While this isn’t solid confirmation that Digimon Survive is only a couple of months away, an ESRB rating does give fans some hope. This is the first somewhat concrete evidence that the game won’t remain in development hell forever, something that became a concern as release dates were pushed back again and again. For a while, the game seemed impossibly far off release, much like Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls 6, which has not seen delays, but has instead always been stated as being a long ways off release.

As stated, an ESRB rating does not confirm when we’ll be seeing Digimon Survive or even a release date announcement. Since the last delay which was announced in July, the game has been officially rated in three countries, and more details about what players can begin to expect has been released. Digimon Survive features a new cast of characters transported to the world of Digital Monsters, and will be closer to the original Anime series in terms of style and story than other Digimon games. Players must survive in their new environment, choosing paths as they go along. First though, it seems Witchcraft has a choice to make on when to release the game.

Digimon Survive is scheduled for release in 2022 for PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One.
